January 5th marks the 93rd birth anniversary of renowned the
Great Legendary Music Director Ramaya
Muthuswamy Master! father to ApSaRaS Leader' Music Director M.Mohanraaj.
Muthuswamy Master was born
in the town of Nagerkovil abutting Kerala, South India, on 05-January, 1926.
He served as Leader of the
Tamil Orchestra at Radio Ceylon through its conversion to CBC/SLBC for a period
of 24-years upto his retirement on 05-January, 1981 at age 55.
Several South Indian playbacksingers-A.M.Rajah,Jikki,K.Ranisang under
Muthuswamy Master's baton. Local artistes included the famed Dharmadasa Walpola
& Lata Walpola; Mohideen Baig; RukmaniDevi; GSB Rani; Sujatha
Perera-Attanayake; Milton Perera; Harun Lanthra; Naradha Dissasekera; Angeline
Gunatilleka; HR Jothipala; and others.
Notable were WD Amaradeva (violin); Premasiri Khemdasa (flute);
Sarath Dassanayake (sitar); Victor Ratnayake (violin); and Dharmadasa Walpola
(flute), all reading their respective instruments under maestro Muthuswamy
Master's direction.
In recognition of his contribution
to SriLankan Cinema music, on a directive made by Prime Minister Sir John
Kotelawala, consequent upon which Muthuswamy Master was awarded an honorary
Ceylon citizenship on 12-April, 1956: a historic day on which Prime Minister
SWRD Bandaranaike's first Cabinet was sworn in.
At the time of his demise in
1988 at age 62, Muthuswamy Master had reportedly composed music for almost
225-Tamil and Sinhala movies
